Just Another GridBot v2 Build

@oldsam you can achieve very good prints with bowden or direct drive systems. I have preferred bowden in the gridbot because it takes substantial weight out of the head and generally leads to higher quality finishes on flat faces at faster speeds. all that with the caveat that you must pay close attention to the XY rigidity of your setup. if it not dialed in, the benefits of the bowden system will be lost.

Cura is a great slicer, but I tend to use my own slicer (also covered here in the forums) called Kiri:Moto. In fact, I have not used any other slicer for the past 6 years. I have 10k+ print hours with Kiri and GridBot by now.

Hi there!

At some point, I felt that the cooling of my GridBot is not sufficient.

I added 5015 fan mount to improve the cooling:

Unfortunately, 5015 easily fits only to the side of the fork which is used with the BLTouch in most of the builds. No easy way (at least, I did not find one at the moment) to attach it to to the other side - intake is on one side of the fan and one have to rotate the fan. As a result, the fan interferes with X-rail:

Of course, one can design longer duct, but it would not be easy to make it nice.

If anyone is really interested - the best way would be to change BLTouch location to the other side of the fork, imho.

Since I am not using BLTouch, I adopted the 1st design and am using it now. It is blowing real hard and I need to be careful with cooling settings in order to prevent “thermal runaway” Marlin error.

@oldsam great update. Thanks for sharing this model. I have also experimented with this type of fan.

Hello dear! Help me please. I collect the printer for the first time. Collecting Grid Bot v2. Bought everything by specification (BOM) cad.onshape. During the assembly process, questions arose.

  1. In the list of non-end stops. Are they needed? Optical or mechanical.
  2. Also read on different forums that you need some kind of thermistor for the extruder?
  3. In the CAD model, the motor mount is on the side. Do I understand correctly that my model of the extruder mount is for direct drive, and it is not needed?
  4. I have a SKR 1.4 Turbo board, TMC2209 drivers. I have not found any firmware for it. And I’m having trouble connecting, whatever? In the forum, everything is somehow blurred about it.!
  1. you can use whatever end-stop type you desire or use motor stall if the driver supports it
  2. the E3D (and clone) hot end assembly usually comes with a thermistor
  3. that back motor is for bowden drive. ignore if you’re doing direct drive
  4. Marlin or Klipper? setting up firmware depends a lot on the board and steppers you choose.

Thanks Stewart! On the first three questions, everything is clear. But on the fourth. SKR 1.4 Turbo board. I plan to put the screen BIGTREETECH TFT43 v3. So the Klipper firmware won’t work? Probably Marlin. Do you have firmware for SKR 1.4 Turbo?
And can I ask for more details of the printer’s photos, where are the limit switches and the board with the connection of wires?

I currently use the SKR 1.4 Turbo with one of my newer GridBots and Klipper, but not with a TFT screen. You’d have to ask around on the Klipper discord or discourse forums if they support it. My guess is yes.

Good. I apologize for distracting you, but the process goes on, and questions appear, and there is no turning back. I will be using Klipper. I don’t want to invent a bicycle, and besides, this is my first self-assembled printer. I will do it in full analogy with you. What Rasprebby PI do you have? Zero, 3B +, 4B? Is the firmware up-to-date at https://github.com/GridSpace/grid-bot?

I haven’t added the Klipper configs to the GridBot repo. That’s a good idea. I’m using a mix of 3B+ and 4 on my bots. Everything is unplugged and in the process of being moved to a new space, so I can’t access the printers right now. Should have that resolved in a few days.

In the main time, you can grab the clipper printer.cfg from this link. Stewart was kind enoght to share his file with me/us in that tread.

OK. Ordered a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B + with a screen. A couple more questions.

  1. about the drivers. I have TMC2209. You connected via UART or SPI. I still don’t understand how to connect the TMC2209 correctly. Whether it is necessary to bend the Diag leg or not.
  2. Stewart, please take a couple of photos of connecting to the SKR 1.4 turbo on the printer itself.

Thanks for the link. I watched. There, unfortunately, SKR 1.3 and TMC2208. And as far as I understand, this is a big difference.

Tony-- Just finished mine with the same board and drivers. This site has been very helpful: https://github.com/bigtreetech/BIGTREETECH-SKR-V1.3/tree/master/BTT%20SKR%20V1.4
Specifically the pinout diagram for the 1.4 turbo board.

On the TMC2209 drivers, assuming BTT, you will need to clip the DIAG leg if you’re going to use endstops. For sensorless homing you’d leave them in place. I used the optical endstops seen elsewhere. Built some mounts and triggers based on Stewart and Jeff’s discussion on another forum (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4931823)

You’ll want to use UART mode, which is setup in the firmware.

I’m using Marlin 2.0.9.1, and just got done with a few days tweaking it for my configuration. Had come from Smoothieware so a little different. Expect a learning curve as you figure out how to edit it! But once you know how, then any changes you make to the printer you can edit and recompile.

Good luck!

Stewart, I look forward to hearing from you.

I’ve been traveling. But will post a pic of 1.4 as soon as I get back in the lab. I’m fairly certain I’m using 2208 drivers, not 2209

I’m wrong. They’re 2209s. Also, can’t seem to get 1.4s anymore. Only SKR2s now

Thanks a lot Stewart. Please send the config. I also have TMC2209 and SKR 1.4 turbo. And if possible, a couple of photos of the wiring on the printer, how it looks as a whole.

Will do when I’m back in the lab. I only had one v1.4 setup. The rest are v1.3. Neither board is available anymore. I managed to short the 1.4 and replaced with an SKR2. The SKR2 has issues, so I sourced a v1.4 off of eBay. Hoping it’s good and to get it installed soon.

As I had mentioned in another thread I’m finishing my GridBot build from a year ago now. Finally.
I’m using an SKR 1.4 Turbo as well and would be interested in the config.

try this file as a starting point:

https://static.grid.space/tmp/printer.cfg.skrv14

it does not have bltouch configured. do you need that?
