How to clear large holes. Helical vs Trace

I was so happy to see a helix operation in the latest version. Unfortunately it does not support clearing with a stepover. However, Trace supports clearing and a step over but it always works from the outer boundary to the inner of a hole which does not make too much sense in my opinion as the inner part will break lose and fly away before getting milled.

Having helical clearing would be really useful for aluminum…

Could not find a solution to get this right! Maybe the feature is still missing or do I miss something…?

I’m glad you are enjoying the helix operation. Configurable cut direction is on the to-do list I’m planning on working on K:M over winter break, and that will likely be one of the additions if Stewart doesn’t get to it first.

I agree that this is a glaring hole in what the ops can do currently. However, I believe that the solution should be more generalizable than just for circular holes.

Looking forward to adding this functionality,
Josiah.

Trace has that capability if you click the, “Inner first,” on the left side menu. It works like a charm.

I missed this addition. You’re right. I think we should add to the description that it only works for trace, and not rough or other ops.

Ooops… Can confirm that this works! It also applies to “Outline” operations (neither checking outside only nor inside only) which makes everything a lot more convenient than the workarounds I used until today!!

I totally missed this option and tbh my thinking was that this is an option on operation level rather than a global one…
