Of course you are right with small parts! However, I do a lot of nesting (Nesting - sharing my experiences and some ideas for improvements) with furniture parts and most times I do not use Tags at all as I can leave enought space between them which holds them until the final cut. However, to get the maximum out of one stock plate of wood, I could set them up with a distance equal to tool diameter and have tags to keep the structure stable.
Tags are a pain when you have laminated material. “Plunging the tags away” will work for sure in this case.
