Milling from the wrong side

I think I finally figured out what I am doing wrong here.
I started out by making letters as an svg in Lightburn. Imported to Kiri given a depth, I thought I could mill them out leaving a cavity to be filled with resin.
I fought with it as I could only cut around the letters but not the actual letter. I tried negative leave z which got me close but I finally realized that the letter must be created as a negative cavity in the first place.
My question- is there a way to do this using an easy flat svg? I am including my kmz but my setting are now all over the place.

for your consideration, the trace in this workspace selects the bottoms of the letters and uses an “inside” trace with step down.
